The Psilocybe tampanensis species was first discovered near Tampa, Florida, in 1977 by mycologist Steven Pollock. Best known for producing dense sclerotia (“truffles”), this species can also form delicate, slender fruiting bodies under the right conditions. It performs particularly well when fruited in cooler temperatures between 20–22°C (68–72°F). Using a thinner substrate layer encourages the mycelium to channel energy into producing mushrooms rather than sclerotia.
Caps typically measure 1–2.5 cm in diameter, starting conical to bell-shaped and maturing to broadly convex. They are a light tan to golden color, sometimes with a slightly darker central zone. Stems are thin, fibrous, and pale cream to off-white, often reaching 6–12 cm in height. Fruiting bodies grow in dense, elegant clusters, creating a visually striking canopy of uniformly shaped mushrooms.
Colonization is moderate in speed, and sclerotia production is prolific when grown in nutrient-rich substrates under extended incubation. The sclerotia are golden-brown, firm, and often larger than those produced by P. mexicana, though smaller than those of P. galindoi ATL7.
