The Strain A phenotype of Psilocybe mexicana was first collected in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, where it grows naturally in subtropical and montane grasslands. This species holds cultural significance among the Mazatec people of the Sierra Mazateca, who have traditionally used it in tribal ceremonies. It is also known to produce both above-ground fruiting bodies and subterranean sclerotia. Sclerotia is colloquially called “truffles, or philosopher’s stones.”
The mushrooms of this phenotype are slender and graceful, with caps typically 1–3 cm in diameter. They begin bell-shaped and mature to broadly convex, showing rich caramel to golden cinnamon tones that may lighten with age. As they reach maturity, the cap margins often develop distinct waves that curve upward, giving them a flower-like appearance. Stems are long, thin, and fibrous, often displaying elegant curvature, ranging from 6–10 cm in length. Gills start light brown and darken to a deep purple-brown as spores mature.
Colonization speed is moderate. P. mexicana Strain A performs best in cooler fruiting conditions between 20–22°C (68–72°F). It is known to form abundant sclerotia when incubated for extended periods
Our liquid cultures arrive in high-quality 10 ml laboratory-grade Luer-Lok syringes. Each order includes a sterile 1-inch, 16-gauge needle for microscopy slide dispensing.

I’ve always had issues with this strain, so it might be my research technique. However, this company’s strain has been the best so far. The problem was that the trichoderma outran the mycelium, but at least I got some mycelium growth, unlike with other companies. Now, I’ve always had good results with ATL7, so I’m researching that next. If I try this strain again, I’ll test it in a very small environment first and then do a grain-to-grain transfer once it’s well established.
