The Albino Penis Envy phenotype of Psilocybe cubensis was developed by mycologist Workman through selective breeding of Penis Envy and PF Albino varieties on grain spawn.
APE is a mushroom with a distinctive appearance. The caps typically start white and develop blue coloration as they mature, often displaying a characteristic white ring around the edges. Throughout their growth, caps can range from nearly flat to elongated, with a unique inverted shape where the bottom is narrower than the top. Unlike many mushrooms, the caps never fully separate from the stem and usually remain smaller in diameter than the thick, robust stipe.
Originally dismissed as a novelty strain due to its poor yield and sparse flushes, APE has undergone years of careful genetic isolation and stabilization. Today, this once-challenging variety reliably produces substantial harvests when cultivated using modern bulk growing techniques, making it a viable option for serious mycologists.
